FrancescaDiMattio’scanvasestakearchitectureastheirsubjectasameanstorestructuretheconceptofspace.Usingpaintingasaspringboardforinvention,DiMattio’sbuildingsandinteriorsdescendintoamyriadofperspectivalconfusionasgrid-likepatternsofbrickandtile,decorativearches,andoffkilterstaircasesbecomedeparturepointsforpainterlycontrastsandexpressivemark-making.Occupyinghuman-sizedscale,DiMattio’scanvasescreateadizzyingsenseofphysicalenvironment.Veeringbetweenarthistoricalreferences–frompop,artnouveau,andopart–DiMattio’spaintingsextendpost-moderneclecticismintotherealmofthesurreal.InLadder,DiMattioenvisionsastill-lifewithinaclassicalporticowhichdissolvesintoanentanglementofillusoryconfusion.DiMattioadaptsthesystematicorderofblackandwhiteillustrationasameanstounderscorethesubtledisruptionofhercomposition.Paintedobjects,suchastheladderandumbrella,becomeembeddedwithinthestylisedbackground,theirrealisticrenderingcareeningagainsttheflatnessofthepictureplaneastheyareengulfedbytheMatisse-likewallpaperandthreatenedbytheundulatingfloor.DiMattio’sBrokenArchappropriatesthestaidnessofherarchitecturalsubjecttoexplorethevisualrepresentationofvelocityandweightlessness.Juxtaposingtherigidgeometryofmosaic-likeformsagainstanexplosionoffeathermotifs,bijouxpatterning,andskewedlinearshapes,DiMattiocreatesasenseofwonderanduneasefromanarrangementofformalelegance.Infusingthefreeflowmeanderofdoodlingwithbaroqueopulence,DiMattiocontrivesanopticalillusionthroughbothdisjointedperspectiveandaheightenedphysicalityofsurfacedetail.
