JohnStezaker’sworkre-examinesthevariousrelationshipstothephotographicimage:asdocumentationoftruth,purveyorofmemory,andsymbolofmodernculture.Inhiscollages,Stezakerappropriatesimagesfoundinbooks,magazines,andpostcardsandusesthemas‘readymades’.Throughhiselegantjuxtapositions,Stezakeradoptsthecontentandcontextsoftheoriginalimagestoconveyhisownwittyandpoignantmeanings.InhisMarriageseries,Stezakerfocusesontheconceptofportraiture,bothasarthistoricalgenreandpublicidentity.Usingpublicityshotsofclassicfilmstars,Stezakersplicesandoverlapsfamousfaces,creatinghybrid‘icons’thatdissociatethefamiliartocreatesensationsoftheuncanny.Couplingmaleandfemaleidentityintounifiedcharacters,Stezakerpointstoadisjointedharmony,wheretheirreconciliationofdifferencebothcomplementsanddetractsfromthewhole.Inhiscorrelatedimages,personalities(andouridealisationsofthem)becomeancillaryandempty,renderedabjectthroughtheirmagnifiedflawsandstruggleforvisualdominance.InusingstylisticimagesfromHollywood’sgoldenera,StezakerbothtemporallyandconceptuallyengageswithhisinterestinSurrealism.Placedincontemporarycontext,hisportraitsretaintheirauraofglamour,whilstsimultaneouslyoperatingasexotic‘artefacts’ofanobsoleteculture.Similartothephotosof‘primitivism’publishedinGeorgeBataille’sDocuments,Stezaker’sportraitscelebratethegrotesque,renderingtheromancewithmodernismequallycompellingandperverse.
