DouglasKolk’scollageddrawingsarerenderedwithunfocussedobsession.Hisposter-sizedworkbroadcastsachaoticmedia:displacedfigures,consumerlogos,andfairytaleghouliesaboundinhischannel-surfingstyleabstraction.Throughhisfragmentedcompositions,Kolkcapturesayouthculturezeitgeist:hisimagespresentingfragileandfluctuatingnotionsofidentityandcorruptedinnocence.Drawinginfluencefromcomicbooksandpulpnovelcovers,Kolk’sdrawingsarepiecedtogetherasnarrativeframes,some,suchasPoppyTakesFlight…andLastSeenWithTrixie,offerclearlydefinedstorieswhileothersmeldinanassociativeblitzkriegofconfettiinformation.Illustratingapsychologicalterrainwherehaircutsandtrainerstakeequalfootingwithstill-lives,serialkillers,andfilmstills,Kolkoffersadiscomfitingreassuranceincontemporaryanxiety.Draftedwithdisparatedrawingstyles,Kolk’sworkphysicallyencapsulatesthissympatheticsyndrome.VyingbetweenOCDandADS,formsrangefromthepoeticallydetailedtotheviolentlydoodled;hissentimentsoverlappinginprecariousschizophrenicbalance.Positingmediaclippingswithdelicatesketchesandboldpainterlyabstraction,Kolkcontrivesanalluringslippagebetweenrealityanddistortion,hisworkentrancingwithconfessionalintimacy,disclosingcompulsivebeautyinthehollowandsalacious.
